RA Training for Beckman College

The Brief: (This has been provided by Tim Slade's eLearning challenges.) Beckman College’s Dean of Student Affairs was receiving a growing number of housing reassignment requests due to roommate conflicts, which was costing the college time and money. Resident Assistants (RAs) play a key role in supporting residence hall communities and moderating roommate conflict. However, they were often brought into situations after conflicts had already escalated. The goal of this project was to create an eLearning course that would help RAs recognize early signs of conflict and apply practical strategies to resolve issues before they led to housing changes.

The Solution: I designed a self-paced microlearning course hosted on Canvas that allows Resident Assistants to complete the training in short segments that fit into their busy schedules.

Key design features include:

  • Microlearning structure:
The course is broken into short modules so RAs can complete training during small blocks of time throughout the week.

  • Scenario-based decision making:
Interactive scenarios ask RAs to choose how they would respond to common roommate conflicts, reinforcing practical conflict management strategies.

  • Ongoing resource library:
The course includes reference tools and guides that RAs can revisit throughout the semester when real situations arise.

  • Interactive learning checks:
Decision-based interactions encourage learners to apply concepts and reflect on the consequences of different approaches.

Establishing Company Core Values

The Brief: A start-up company was reevaluating its core values. While some values had previously been identified, they were loosely defined and lacked alignment with the leadership team’s vision for the organization. The CEO provided a PowerPoint with initial ideas and requested an eLearning resource that could guide leadership through the process of developing clear, meaningful core values during an upcoming retreat. The goal was to transform the rough ideas into a structured learning experience that would help leaders understand what strong core values look like and actively participate in defining them for their organization.

The Solution: I designed a self-paced eLearning module using Articulate Rise that leaders could easily follow during the retreat. The course walks participants through the process of defining strong organizational values while encouraging reflection and collaboration. Each section includes a short lesson followed by an interactive activity that helps leaders apply the concepts to their own organization.

Key components include:

  • Clear explanations of what core values are and why they matter

  • Examples of strong and weak organizational values

  • Practical dos and don’ts for writing meaningful values

  • Guided activities to help leaders draft and refine their own core values

  • Interactive reflection prompts to encourage discussion and alignment among the leadership tea
